These are the words of my client. All this "BE-ing" stuff is just so boring.

She's trying so hard. Trying to learn how to "BE." I must be doing something wrong, she thinks, because it's so much work to get there and when she does—it's just plain boring. Why bother?

Here's a truth. If you are struggling—it isn't being. 

Maybe you've had this issue. Your friends—your neighbors—your co-workers suggest to you that life isn't about the DOING—it's about the BEING. So you try. You decide to embrace this new way of life.  You take yoga or qigong classes and learn what it is like to be totally present with your body. You go on silent retreats to discover what being with your own thoughts will bring you. You meditate in the morning—every day—in order to center yourself and experience your day from a place of fullness and presence.

So, Canal Street. If you don't know about it, you haven't done much shopping in New York City. If you have, you know exactly what types of watches, purses, and electronics are available here. All fake, all illegal, but some of them very convincing fakes.

Here's the problem though—once you buy it—you know it's fake. You know that when you walk into a room with your gorgeous Prada or stylish Rolex, you are really only wearing $50 worth of merchandise—not the $5000 that the real thing might cost.

Do you get the same satisfaction that you would have gotten by the compliments and noticings that might go on? Do you feel happy about your wealth? Do you feel like you belong with the other people in the room with actual Rolexes?

I was at Jimmy John's Sandwich Shop for lunch today. Just doing what I often do: eating and people watching. In walks the YellowPages delivery guy. He hands a large bag with at least one YellowPages book to the cashier after he gets him to sign for it. The cashier in turn brings it to the manager who promptly throws it in the nearest garbage.

Last week, I walked into my office building and there is a YellowPages in front of every suite. Today, there they all sit. Not one book has been brought into an office. We are all  hoping they will just go away. We certainly don't need them.

In the city of Seattle, the producers of YellowPages and other directories are suing the city claiming first amendment rights because the city council passed a law that allows people to opt-out of delivery. This alone will save the city $350k in recycling costs. Wow!  Read More »
