Poetry is a clear window into the heart. I often write to express the thoughts and emotions inside me--not knowing what will appear on the page but invariably discovering more about myself and the world around me.

I am a Lover

Posted Saturday, February 02, 2013

I am a lover
Not a fighter
I kiss the world
Hold it tight
Embrace you
Touch you
Love you

I am a hedonist
Not a puritan
I pleasure the world
Experience it fully
Push you
Control you
Worship you

I am matchmaker
Not a referee
I bring together the world
Speak to it
Listen to you
Talk to you
Dream for you

I am a romantic
Not a stoic
I see beauty in the world
Make it radiant
Charm you
Witness you
Romance you

I am a companion
Not loner
I assist the world
Support it
Come alongside you
Respect you
Befriend you

I am a lover
Not a fighter
I kiss the world
Hold it tight
Embrace you
Touch you
Love you

Abandoned

Posted Saturday, February 02, 2013

When I was six
I cried
When you left

I decided
I wasn’t good enough
Wasn’t lovable enough
Wasn’t smart enough

When I was 30
I cried
When you left

I decided
I wasn’t worth it
I wasn’t what you needed

When I was 39
I cried
When you left

This time
I realized it was you
It wasn’t me

I decided
I am good enough
I am lovable enough
I am smart enough
I am worth it
I am needed

Now I can’t be abandoned
By me

Kenny

There's a little boy inside of me
He's cute
Blonde
Friendly
And ALWAYS smiling

He loves his grandparents
He loves camp
He loves to tinker
Fiddle with stuff
Take it apart

He loves to explore
Ride his bike forever
Sing to Jesus
Dream about better days

Somewhere along the way
The smile seems less frequent
Tinkering ended
Exploring ceased
And dreams stayed dreams

The little boy in me
He deserves better
He deserves love
Just for being him

My Vision for the World

Posted Tuesday, January 29, 2013

I long for a world
Where beauty overrides business
Where cyclists ride for the fun of it
Where nations don't need to exist
Because we are all one tribe

I long for a world
Where fathers don't leave their children
Where mothers remain sane
Where siblings protect siblings
Because they are one family

I long for a world
Where humans can be humans
Where perfection isn't idolized
Where failure is celebrated
Because wisdom has always made this clear

I long for a world
Without pretending
Without deception
Without lies
Because these are the root of hatred

I long for a world
Vulnerable about ourselves
Comfortable in our lack of control
And Authentic to the core
Because this is the root of love

Radical Honesty

Posted Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Once upon a time
Like all fairy tales start
We agreed
No lies
Brutal honesty

Great idea
Sounds good anyway
Right

Reality is
Truth hurts
Doesn't sound pretty
Cuts to the core

You don't like sushi?
My gift was hurtful?
I'm not perfect?
You have a past?
You've made mistakes?
You're not sure about us?

Is it time to go back
Back to the fairy tale?

No chance
Even at it's worst
Truth wins

Reality is
Truth is freeing
May not sound pretty
Gets at the core

Creates new conversation
Brings change
New ways of being
Deeper connection
True love

Today

Today
I had doubts

Today
I wondered
Will things work out?

Today
I sat with my choices
Considered my options
Thought things through

Today
I asked myself questions

What do I want?
What is important to me?
What am I creating?

For me?
For the world?

I want a full life
Living from my talents
Chasing the adventure

Relationships are what matter

I am creating poetry
I am creating conversation
I am pursuing a passion
A passion for authenticity

Today
I gained confidence

Today
I embraced
It's all working out
Just as intended

Today
I rested in the questions
Life is real

Creation

Posted Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Have you ever cried
Stood in awe
At the sight of creation?

A tree
The sunrise
The mountains
The ocean
The aurora borealis

Have you ever cried
Stood in awe
At the sight of creation?

A child
Her first steps
His first words
Her ballet recital
His high school graduation

Have you ever cried
Stood in awe
At the sight of creation?

A work of art
The Duomo in Florence
Michelangelo's Pieta
Picasso's Guernica

Have you ever cried
Stood in awe
At the sight of creation?

Your life
Your creation
Your gift
To the world

Lonely

Posted Friday, August 10, 2012

You live
You cope
You survive

I see you
In your cars
On your benches
In the park
Walking to the train

No smiles
No joy
Missing friendship
Going where?
Creating what?

My heart breaks
For you
Wonders why
Why do you keep doing it?
Day after lonely day

You certainly know how
To persevere
Good for you!
Lesson learned!

Now try this:
Break free!
Dream!
Run towards life!
Now!

The Center

Posted Friday, August 10, 2012

The place
Where I am just like you
And you are just like me

Qi
Spirit
Life-force
THE force

It's what connects us
Binds us
It says--NAMASTE

It admits
I need you
I am you
We are one
Together

What We Need

Posted Friday, August 10, 2012

Teenage lovers know
We knew too
We forgot

We need people
We need commitment
We need loyalty
We need vows of partnership
We can't do life alone

We try
To be OK
Alone

People disappoint
People betray
People are human

So
We try
To be OK
Alone

Then
Then we become
Teenage lovers again
We get it
Understand our need
Our want

And
We're afraid
Still
In our fear
We hold on
To our needs

Partnership
Belonging
Togetherness
And the crucible of love
