Poetry is a clear window into the heart. I often write to express the thoughts and emotions inside me--not knowing what will appear on the page but invariably discovering more about myself and the world around me.

Overcoming

What is it about some people?
Some people that you meet
They move forward
No matter the circumstances
They not only survive
They thrive

What voices do they hear
What messages do they tell themselves
When they are up against it
When life is falling down
Or opportunity is knocking
And it's time to make a decision

What is it about some people
Some people that you meet
They stand still
No matter the circumstances
They not only stagnate
They backslide

What voices do they hear
What messages do they tell themselves
When they are up against it
When life is falling down
Or opportunity is knocking
And it's time to make a decision

They both hear voices of judgement
They both hear "you can't do it"
They both hear "you won't make it"

Fear is there
That's for sure
For both
So what's the difference?

I'm not certain
I could be wrong
But the one that moves forward knows
Knows deep inside
She'll be OK—no matter what the outcome
The one that shrinks back
Just isn't sure
She might not make it
She'll wait until she's sure
